Parent Coaches - We're Here To Help!

Coaching a young team is such a rewarding experience. We have put together our coaching cheat sheet to help you navigate your first season supporting your young athletes.

Understanding Children Aged 5-10 years

Children aged 5-7 generally have short attention spans. They;

  • Love games and imagination
  • Need lots of movement
  • Learn by copying
  • Need simple instructions
  • Can become frustrated easily


Our coaching tip:
Don't spend 10 minutes explaining an activity. Show them, then let them have a go.


Children aged 7-10 years can;

  • Understand simple tactics
  • Follow instructions for longer
  • Work with teammates
  • Learn basic rules
  • Practise skills repeatedly
  • Begin to understand positions


Our coaching tip:
Keep explanations short, but gradually introduce more challenge.



The Golden Rule - KEEP THEM MOVING! 

Avoid a line of players waiting for their turn.

Instead, break into smaller groups. More action = more engagement = easier for the coach!
